Hong Kong is an international city where foreigners are everywhere I go.

editorial_graphic.jpgSometimes I found they are interesting as they have different kind of hair styles, eye colour or even diabolical size of bottoms.

I love to look at their babies as well; blonde, curly hair with blue eyes, oh, how cute. Maybe the babies are so cute that a lot of my friends have set goals to be with foreigners.

I am not talking about those who met their true love of life and forgot about their nationalities or races; believe me, there are people who desperately want to be with foreigners so much they plan their daily life accordingly.

A, my friend, constantly finds herself with a crush on foreigners. She uses every single medium to get in touch with them – Facebook, MySpace, MSN or nightclubs, etc.

Going out with her and her group of same ‘ambitious’ girls is the hardest time ever; while they are out clubbing or even eating out, they speak English with each other (believe me, their English is not good at all, still they try their best to imply some sort of ‘American’ accent into such.)

G, one of A’s friends, once told me that local boys make her sick. “Local guys are stingy, narrow minded and extremely ugly,” she said.

‘Stingy’ and ‘narrow minded’ should be types of personality, I am amazed that she doesn’t know foreigners can also be ‘extremely ugly’, after all ‘ugly ‘ is an existing word from all English dictionaries.

A has never had a relationship with anyone; therefore I ask her what kind of person she is looking for. “He has to be a blonde, tall, good looking and best to be from somewhere in Europe,” said A.

It is amusing that she has never thought of one’s personality but instead care about the nationality.

A told me how much she envies one of her friends. “She is the luckiest thing in this world, I would do anything just to have a similar kind of her life!” said A.

I asked her why her friend is such a lucky one; may be he is a warm-hearted guy or loaded with money?

A said, “well, her boyfriend is BLACK, which is like the best thing ever.”

As I remembered, that was the last time I talked to A.

I used to think getting an exotic Asian wife is what westerners want. Those kind of wives are called ‘trophy-wives’ – as they are smart, able to speak in fluent English and always gorgeous.

Trophy-wives are of such good quality that men are proud to take them out and show off in front of friends and colleagues (that’s probably why they always sit on the outdoor bench in Lan Kwai Fong!).

Now the situation is turned around by these type of ‘west-hunting troops’.

There are plenty of girls or women hanging out at clubs and bars, or even gyms in Central district, doing so many things and spending so much just to fish a chance to meet with someone ‘special’ – not someone that is special because of the way he acts or speaks or thinks, but just simply because of his skin colour, which is unbelievably shallow and narrow minded.

In a way of thinking, I believed that these ‘west-hunters’ share the same kind of thinking as Lolita and Cosplayers.

Lolita and Cosplayers dress up in special ways and walk on the street because they enjoy being the centre of attention, letting people stare at them and check out their clothes; and some even believe in the way they are.

Same here for these ‘west-hunters’, walking in IKEA with a westerner makes other people give attention to them, speaking loudly in English even only between girls themselves make them feel superior and different from other local girls.

Last but not least, having a relationship with westerners can be seen as a kind of life style.

I do feel sorry to see how bad relationships between local men and women nowadays have became –women are better educated, men get fed up with women who are now more aggressive as they no longer need men to bring home the bread.

Men go for beautiful women from the mainland who listen to them and stick to the good old female role; women go for foreigners as they provide them more freedom and equality.

Come to think of it, I would rather be a Lolita.
